Inhibiting or Passivating transformer oil?

Inhibitor:

Inhibitor also called antioxidant, is made to slow down the oxidation rate of inhibited oil which in turn better protects your asset.

Amongst other things, oxidation can thicken the oil and form sludge which affects its cooling performance (higher operating temperatures negatively impact the insulating paper life, the transformer rating and efficiency, increases losses etc…); it also increases the oil acidity which can cause faster degradation of the solid insulation (paper), and decreases the oil electrical performance.

Overtime, as it protects the oil against oxidation, the inhibitor gets consumed at a rate dependent on the operation conditions of the asset.

Taking regular oil samples and testing for inhibitor content will guide you as whether to top up with inhibitor based on the latest mineral insulating oil maintenance standards IEC 60422 and/or AS 60422.

Note that the maximum allowed to comply to the latest IEC 60296 and AS 60296 standards is 0.4%.

Passivator:

Passivator (sometimes called metal inhibitor) is made to block potential copper corrosion reaction that may be taking place inside your asset due to the presence of sulfur-based copper corrosive species. It will not repair any corrosion or associated damage that would have already taken place inside your transformer.

If oil sample testing reveals corrosiveness and your company or your customer has requested passivation of the oil, or if you are re-passivating an oil previously passivated, it is recommended to follow the latest mineral insulating oil maintenance standards IEC 60422 and/or AS 60422 standards.
